Mixed number ↔ improper fraction

A mixed number (like 1¾) is a whole number plus a proper fraction. An improper fraction (like 7/4) is a fraction where the numerator is bigger than the denominator. They mean the same value — just two ways of writing it.

What does this generator do?

Randomly asks you to convert from mixed to improper, or from improper to mixed. The denominator stays a friendly value (halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, sixths, eighths, tenths).

How to use it

Mixed → improper: multiply the whole number by the denominator, then add the numerator. The denominator stays the same. Improper → mixed: divide the numerator by the denominator; the quotient is the whole and the remainder is the new numerator.
