Counting larger amounts

To count money quickly, start with the biggest and work down.

A reliable order

  1. Bills first (5 €, 10 €, 20 €, 50 €).
  2. Big coins (1 €, 2 €).
  3. Small cent coins (50 c, 20 c, 10 c, 5 c, 2 c, 1 c).

If you mix the order you can still get the right answer — but it's slower and easier to forget a coin.

Example

1 × 10 € + 2 × 2 € + 1 × 1 € + 50 c + 20 c

  • Bills: 10 €.
  • Big coins: 2 + 2 + 1 = 5 €.
  • Cent coins: 50 + 20 = 70 c.
  • Total: 15 € 70 c (or 15.70 €).

Watch the units

  • "10 €" is 10 euros.
  • "10 c" or "10 cents" is 10 cents — a hundred times smaller.
  • 100 cents = 1 €.

Summary

  • Count bills first, then big coins, then small.
  • 1 € = 100 cents.
  • Always include the unit: "12 € 30 c", not just "12.30".
