Counting to 5
You already know the numbers 1, 2 and 3. Today we will add two more — 4 and 5.
The number four
The digit 4 is written like a little chair with a roof. Four shows up in lots of things around us:
- four corners on a square
- four legs on a table
- four wheels on a car
- four paws on a dog
The number five
The digit 5 looks like a table with a big belly. We know five well — you have five fingers on one hand!
Show your hand and count your fingers: thumb, index, middle, ring, little. Five!
Counting the animals
Look at the picture above. Count the animals one by one, pointing at each:
one dog... two cats... three cats... four bunny... five fox.
Five animals altogether. Remember — the last number you say tells you how many there are.
The counting rule
To be sure you've counted correctly, always do it like this:
- point with your finger at the object
- say the number out loud
- move on to the next object
- never count one object twice
Try it yourself
In the Counting exercise you will see balls — sometimes there will be exactly 5. Try to find the right number.
When you've got the hang of this, let's go further to Counting to 10.
