Numbers to 20

Welcome back, math friend! Last year you learned to count up to 10. Now we are going further — all the way up to 20. Numbers help us tell how many cookies are on the plate, how many friends are at the table or how many steps to climb to your room.

Numbers we already know

You know these from before:

0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

Zero means nothing — empty hands. Ten is when all your fingers are up.

New numbers we will learn

After ten come the new ones. Listen how they sound:

11 eleven, 12 twelve, 13 thirteen, 14 fourteen, 15 fifteen,

16 sixteen, 17 seventeen, 18 eighteen, 19 nineteen, 20 twenty

Some of them sound a bit like 3, 4, 5… plus the word "teen". That is on purpose — these numbers are made of one ten and a few more.

Why numbers to 20

Numbers to 20 are everywhere. The clock shows minutes up to 20. Your shoe size is around there. A small pizza has up to 8 slices, and a bigger one up to 16. By the end of first grade you will read and write any number from 0 to 20 without thinking twice.
