Volume — milliliters and liters

Volume tells us how much liquid fits in something.

  • ml (milliliter) — small amounts. A teaspoon is about 5 ml.
  • l (liter) — bigger amounts. A large bottle of water is 1 l.

1 l = 1000 ml.

Things to measure

ContainerAbout
Teaspoon5 ml
Tablespoon15 ml
Glass of water250 ml
Small juice carton500 ml
Big bottle of water1 l = 1000 ml
Bucket10 l

Converting l to ml

Multiply liters by 1000, then add the leftover ml.

2 l 250 ml = 2 × 1000 + 250 = 2250 ml.

3 l = 3000 ml.

1 l 50 ml = 1050 ml.

Converting ml to l and ml

Take whole thousands out.

1500 ml = 1 l 500 ml.

2000 ml = 2 l.

3700 ml = 3 l 700 ml.

Comparing volumes

Convert to the same unit first.

1 l vs. 750 ml → 1000 vs. 750 → 1 l > 750 ml.

2500 ml vs. 2 l 600 ml → 2500 vs. 2600 → 2500 ml < 2 l 600 ml.

Summary

  • 1 l = 1000 ml.
  • l → ml: multiply by 1000.
  • ml → l+ml: take whole thousands out.
  • The conversion is the same as g↔kg — both are × 1000.
