Simple problems
You can add and subtract. Now we'll try a few different puzzle shapes that combine those skills.
Word problems
A word problem is an example told as a little story. Try this one:
In the garden there are 3 frogs. 5 more hop in. How many frogs are there now?
We're after the sum: 3 + 5 = 8 frogs.
And try this:
Mum has 9 pencils in a cup. She gives you 4. How many are left in the cup?
We're after the difference: 9 – 4 = 5 pencils.
Try it step by step
Even with two similar examples in a row, work them one at a time:
4 + 2 = 6
6 – 1 = 5
You solve the first, then the second. One step at a time and you won't get muddled.
Try it yourself
In Addition and subtraction, the "up to 10" level is perfect for the basics.
In Adding pictures, you add up what you see.
